Kilmainham Gaol is one of the most popular tourist sights in Dublin. It is the largest unoccupied jails in Europe and has housed many famous prisoners involved in the fight for Irish Independence. These include Charles Stuart Parnell and American born Eamon de Valera who after escaping execution became Ireland’s prime minister in 1932 and President of Ireland in 1959. The Gaol now a museum and is stroller accessible and offers tea rooms. (Please note that due to major building works being undertaken at Kilmainham Gaol until the end of December 2015, certain areas of the Gaol, principally the East Wing and the Exhibition/ Museum area will not be accessible from time to time. Reduced admission fees will be applicable in respect of the re-development period)
