Where did you go?
We stayed in my parent’s house in County Cork and also went to the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney.
When did you go?
In February 2015 for 2 weeks. We stayed in Killarney for 4 nights.
Who did you travel with?
I travelled with my husband and my two daughters.
How old were your kids when you travelled?
Anna had just turned 4 and Sophie was two and half.
How was the journey there?
The trip was hassle free. The two girls love to travel and find it a big adventure. We hired a car in Dublin which I found annoying as we had to go to the main office to pick up the car and then find our way out of Dublin airport onto the motorway which can be difficult as the road signs aren’t great. You can also fly from Berlin into Shannon as an option. It is easier to get to Cork/ Kerry from Shannon.
What was the food like at your destination?
Food at my mums was the best; the girls had no problem adjusting. The food in the hotel in Killarney was fantastic. We booked breakfast and dinner for three nights and I was really surprised by the quality of the food, it was enjoyed by all and they provided a great selection for the kids.
Were you able to find all your baby and toddler essentials at your destination (formula, food, wipes, nappies, medication etc)?
Everything can be found locally. You can buy Aptamil, Hipp Organic, SMA and Cow and Gate in any supermarket. Pampers and Huggies are also available everywhere.
How was the public transport system?
We did not have any need to use the public transport while staying in Cork as we had family there. But from I could see there are plenty of bus routes available to people.
In Killarney, the hotel provided a shuttle bus for guests so they could be driven into Killarney centre.
Did you use a baby carrier or a stroller?
I just a normal foldable stroller for Sophie.
What kind of activities did you do?
While there we visited Fota Wildlife Park and Cobh in County Cork along with Cork City. We went to many of the pet farms that can be found in around Cork County. We brought the girls to Supernova in Ballincollig just outside the city which is brilliant and also to leisure world, Churchfield in Cork City and to Fitzgerald’s Park in Cork City.
In Killarney we used the hotel swimming pool and play area provided for children which was really great. The hotel provided night time entertainment for children which the girls found fantastic. We also visited the Killarney national Park and Gardens, walked around the lakes.
Overall, did you have a good trip?
We had a great holiday despite the rain.
Do you have any advice for parents travelling to the same place?
Bring rain gear with you and for the children because it will most defiantly rain while in Ireland. Also to make your trip more efficient but also more expensive, it is better to avail of a car to get around.
